The Story of SAWA
My mother was born in British Columbia. Just before WWII broke out she traveled to Japan for a visit, and was unable to return to Canada. I do not remember her at all, but always held the dream of living in BC. When the dream came true, I had a son of my own who came with me to Canada. My son and I were given back my mother's citizenship in the year 2000. We were now welcome to return to my mother's home.
SAWA tearoom is a culmination of dreams. The challenge was to find where I could interact with Canada and also integrate the offerings of Japan. I decided to open a business that could relate to the beauty of both BC and Japan. Tea is rich in symbolism and seemed an appropriate place for my hopes and visions to meet. I have been a practicing artist for over 20 years, and have long held the vision of opening a gallery. In 2005, SAWA opened its doors with offerings of teas, crafts and art exhibitions. This evolved into also serving foods with a health-conscious focus.
A turning point: When I was living a regular middle class life with no serious hope/demand for the future, I had not planned on having a baby, in fact, I felt worried about the idea. But I had an unplanned pregnancy quite late in my life. My age made for possible complications. My decision to be a mother was a turning point in how I lived, how I thought and especially what I ate. I wanted to devote my energy towards creating a positive future for people, for the planet, for my new born baby. As a parent, I had to start shifting my negative thinking and start making positive contributions. My inclination towards healthy environment and organic migrated into the menu of SAWA tearoom. The more I learned about food and health, the more it became obvious that foods should be chemical free, fresh and organic. SAWA offers the choice for a healthy organic lifestyle.
The intention of SAWA is to help our planet and people stay healthy and "green". I am grateful to be home in this beautiful land where my mother was born.
